“Inside My Heart (Choosing to Live With Passion and Purpose”

RMInsdMyHrtbkcvrpicIn “Inside My Heart”, Robin McGraw, who is the wife of television talk show host, Dr Phil, shares valuable insights gleaned from her memories of her parents’ marriage and her childhood. She then uses this to illustrate the ways that we have the power to choose the kind of adult life we want to have, and to make the choice to actively pursue it. Robin goes on to apply the finishing touches to this well written masterpiece by not only sharing how she put the principles she learned through these experiences to work in her own life in choosing Dr. Phil as her husband, but also how their implementing these strategies in their marriage and family life has paid off for them as well as their children, and can for you too!

Sharing with us encouraging glimpses into her years of dating and marrying Dr. Phil, raising their two sons together, and insightful moments in their 30 plus years of marriage, she emphasizes that you have a right to live a truly happy, satisfying, and productive life, and make a choice to pursue it. She teaches us how to draw from the negative experiences in our lives, and realize that we have the power to choose the kind of life we want to live, and to live it, passionately and purposefully. We have to right to choose the kind of person we are going to marry and what we want out of life, and to realize that we are not going to settle for anything less, as she states here in this direct quote, taken from the book’s description:

I believe we were put on this earth to enjoy lives of joy and abundance, and that is what I want for you and for me. It’s not my intention to give people advice on how to solve their problems (I leave that to my husband). But I’ve had my share of struggles over the years, and I know a thing or two about what has worked for me. I have chosen to be an active participant in my life rather than a spectator, and in so doing I have chosen how to be a woman, how to be a wife, and how to be a mother in ways that are uniquely my own. I offer the stories of these choices as evidence of the power of sheer determination, will, and faith in God.

Part of the reason I have chosen to review this insightful book and share it with you here in my “reading room” of books that have impacted my life is, I have raised two daughters, and I want the very best for them, as well as for all of the young women like them. My daughters are both beautiful, smart, and gifted in their own unique ways, yet they are as different as day and night. It has been an ongoing part of my goal to help them learn to work together, despite their differences. When I discovered this book, I gave it to my daughters as a gift, and then went and purchased an extra copy for myself.

I cannot say that I have always made the right choices as a mother for them. I have made my mistakes, just as anyone else has. But as a mother, and now, grandmother to their precious little boys, I have chosen to learn from my mistakes as well as from the life changing events, good and bad, that have happened in my life, and, as Robin says, to take the good things that have come from it, and made me stronger, and carry those things forward, and leave the bad behind. I also realized, as God began to work His healing power in my life, that I had the power to choose what aspects of these things I wanted to carry forward in my life, and what I decided would not be carried forward into the rest of my life. I’ve chosen the kind of life I want to live and that is what I want to pass on to them.

My daughters, as well as my son, who is my eldest, know that I haven’t always been perfect, anymore than anyone else is. I suffered a Near Death Experience in a horrific automobile accident with their father, my first husband before we were married, which resulted in psychological scars and problems that eventually resulted, unavoidably, in our going our separate ways. But we have both since remarried, and both continue, to share in our children’s joys, triumphs, as well as their tough times.

I chose to learn from the bad, trust in God’s healing and restoring mercy to help me learn from it all, and share what I have learned over the years in my upcoming book, “CPR For Your Faith, Resuscitating the Christian Heart (Yes, Your Ship is  Coming In!)”. It is my sincere hope that what I have learned over the years since then, will help my children and grandchildren, as well as anyone who reads my story.

I am now married to my high school sweetheart, and we thank God for His grace every day in bringing us back together.  Since we each have three children from our previous marriages, , in all, three girls and three boys, we have said we now have “The Brady Bunch”!  It is our most heartfelt desire and purpose to keep God in our marriage and (by the way, my husband has also read Robin’s book) actively seek His divine purpose and plan for our life together. As I grow in Him and learn every day on my own path to becoming a traditionally published author, I pray every day that  God will help us to be the empowering light and example we need to be to our children, so that they in turn, can realize the power and potential in choosing the kind of lives they want to live, and pursue them passionately and purposefully.

“Inside My Heart” (Choosing to Live with Passion and Purpose) is definitely a truly inspiring and powerful must read for anyone who has young daughters striving to become productive, happy, and strong women in a changing and tough world, as well as for anyone who wants to live their life for the better. I chose to use my God given power to choose the kind of life I want to live and to pursue that life actively and be a participant rather than a spectator, as Robin says. I hope you will too!
